Thais began to migrate from China in the 11th Century. Thailand
is the only nation in south-east Asia to never have been
dominated or controlled by a European power, thanks to King
Mongkut and his son, King Chulalongkorn who ruled from 1851 to
1910. During their reign, the country was modernized and
treaties were signed with Britain and France. In 1931 a
bloodless revolution limited the monarchy. In 1941 Japan
occupied the country and after the war, Thailand followed a pro-
western stance. In 1976 a bloody military coup took over the
government. Vietnamese troops have crossed the boarder into
Thailand on several occasions and have been repulsed by Thai
forces in the 1980s. @
